Krishna Janmashtami
Janmashthami is the
birthday celebration of Lord Krishna. This festival is
celebrated in the month of August/September. This festival
is very popular in Northern region. The temples are
decorated on Janmashthami specially in Mathura and
Vrindavan. People keep fast and broken at midnight.
According to the Mahabharata epic, Lord Krishna was born
at stormy midnight. On the occassion of Janmashthami, a
matka is suspended high above the ground, pyramid of group
of people break it. By this way the people celebrated this
festival.
Legend :
A story associated with the birth of Lord Krishna. The
king Kansa, uncle of Lord Krishna wanted to kill him. This
was because lord predicted him that he would kill by the
eight child of Devki, his sister. He already kill her 7
child and was waiting for the 8th child but unfortunately
he was not success in his plan. When the Lord Krishna
borned, a miracle occured. The door of the jail was
opened, the guard fell asleep and Vasudeva, the father of
Lord Krishna was command by the voice from the heaven to
take his child to Gokul. He went to there and exchanged
his 8th son with his friend's daughter. Lord Krishna was
safely reached to there and the plan of Kansa was failed.
Raksha Bandhan
Also known as Rakhi one of the most popular festivals of
India. It is the festival of symbol of love of brothers
and sisters. It is celebrated on the full moon day of the
month of Shravan according to the Hindu calender. The
sisters tie the Rakhi string on their brothers right wrist
and pray to god for their happiness and long life.
The festival of love of brothers and sisters is also
mentioned in Mahabharata Epic. Draupadi, the wife of
Pandavas tied rakhi on the wrist of Lord Krishna as he
protected her from the Kauravas. It is also said that it
was also followed by Lord Yama(The Lord of death) and his
sister Yamuna. |
